Less than 24-hours after Denver began notifying dispensaries that they have to collect sales tax on medical marijuana, the city council's safety committee began debating a proposed set of new regulations on the budding industry. "We want to help people who legitimately need medical marijuana but we want to prevent abuse," said Councilman Charlie Brown. Brown unveiled a rough draft of requirements and restrictions Wednesday that he hopes will do just that.

Copan's football team will get plenty of practice today with its sitting muscles. The Hornets (3-1, 1-1) will board the bus for a 3.5 hour trip to Gans (2-2, 2-1) in a District B-4 eight-man showdown. Although this is only a week five encounter, the outcome could play a major factor in the playoff shuffle by the end of the season.

Fall is finally here six weeks into the North Carolina high school football season, and despite some wet weather in some parts of the state, most teams hit the field on their quest toward the championships. The rubber met the road at East Mecklenburg as the Eagles played host to Independence. The Eagles stood 4-1, with their only loss coming to Mallard Creek on Sept. 4.

Leesville Road's defense forced five turnovers, capitalizing on two to shut down East Wake 28-0 Friday night. Thurston Cox had two of the three interceptions taken by the Pride and added a receiving touchdown to his night. "The interceptions mean more," Cox said.

A trophy presented by his family in memory of a Melksham cricket player and coach has been presented to a promising young cricketer at Beanacre Cricket Club. Owen Lewis, 41, a father-of-three, was a former secretary, player and youth coach at Beanacre Cricket Club. He was found dead at his flat in Bath Road, Melksham, on March 20. Cox now has five interceptions on the season to go with his four receiving TDs. While the Pride's offense sputtered, the defense helped out giving Leesville Road short field situations to work with. "The defense rose up and made the plays," Leesville Road coach David Green said. In the first quarter the Pride's defense stopped East Wake on fourth-and-1 at the Pride's 45-yard line.

Stanley, who left the game with a big lead in the second period, opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Thurston Cox. Stanley later ran 20 yards for another score. The Pride's Dylan Edwards scored on an 8-yard run. Nate Whittington dashed 32 yards, and Ryan Mangum added a 5-yard scoring run.
